Puri Travel Guide Part 20: The Return Journey — Evening Trains, Bus Options, and Getting Home Safely

Complete return journey guide from Puri to Bhubaneswar: evening train schedule, platform tips, bus alternatives, auto to Niladri Vihar, and the final leg home.

Part 20: The Return Journey — Evening Trains, Bus Options, and Getting Home Safely

By 6:30 PM on Saturday, you will have achieved everything you set out to do: darshan at the Jagannath Temple, Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar, a visit to one or two nearby temples, and a peaceful sunset at the beach. Your mother will be tired but spiritually fulfilled. Your feet will ache. Your cotton kurta will be damp with sweat. And now, there is one final task: getting home.

The return journey is the most underestimated part of any day trip. Exhaustion, fading daylight, and the crowds of other returning pilgrims create a unique set of challenges. Here is your plan.

Getting to Puri Railway Station

From Swargadwar Beach, the railway station is approximately 2 kilometres north.

Auto-Rickshaw from Beach to Station

  • Cost: ₹40 to ₹80
  • Duration: 8 to 12 minutes
  • Availability: Autos are plentiful at the beach area in the evening.
  • Negotiation Tip: Quote ₹50 first. Most drivers will accept ₹60.

E-Rickshaw from Beach to Station

  • Cost: ₹20 per person (shared)
  • Duration: 12 to 15 minutes
  • Availability: Available on the main road near the beach, not on the sand itself.

Evening Train Options: Puri to Bhubaneswar

The evening schedule offers several trains from Puri (PURI) back to Bhubaneswar (BBS):

Train NameNumberDeparts PURIArrives BBSDuration
Puri-Howrah Express1283817:5019:502h 00m
Puri-Durg Express1842518:3020:452h 15m
Puri-Sonepur Express1842119:0021:152h 15m
Puri-Howrah SF Express2220220:0022:002h 00m
Various MEMU/Passenger-17:00 – 21:00-1.5 – 2.5h

Target the Puri-Durg Express (18425) at 18:30 (6:30 PM) or any MEMU/Passenger train between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

This timing aligns perfectly with your beach exit at 6:30 PM → auto to station by 6:50 PM → buy tickets and board by 7:00-7:30 PM.

Ticketing for the Return

  • UTS App: Book your return ticket on your phone while sitting at the beach (after retrieving your phone from the temple locker). Same process as the morning: BBS destination, General class.
  • Station Counter: The Puri station has a UTS counter that is less crowded in the evening than in the morning.
  • Cost: ₹45 to ₹60 per person (General class).

The Return Train Experience

The evening train ride is qualitatively different from the morning:

  • You are tired, so the rhythmic motion of the train is soporific. Your mother may fall asleep.
  • The landscape is darker — you will see the lights of villages and small towns twinkling.
  • The train is less crowded in the evening than during the morning rush.
  • Total travel time: approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

The Bus Alternative for Return

If you miss the trains or prefer a bus, head to the Puri Bus Stand (near Gundicha Temple area, about 3 km from the beach):

Bus TypeLast Departure (Approx.)FareDuration
OSRTC Government9:00 PM₹80-₹1502-3 hours
Ama Bus Route 518:00 PM₹70-₹1002-2.5 hours
Private Bus10:00 PM₹100-₹2002-3 hours

Warning: The bus return is significantly worse than the bus outbound:

  • Highway traffic is heavier in the evening
  • Oncoming headlight glare is blinding
  • The jerky ride combined with exhaustion amplifies motion sickness
  • There are no toilets on the bus, and the ride takes 2-3 hours

Strong recommendation: Take the train back. It is safer, faster, smoother, and cheaper.

The Final Leg: Bhubaneswar Station to Niladri Vihar

Your train arrives at Bhubaneswar Railway Station (BBS) between 8:30 PM and 10:00 PM, depending on which train you take.

Auto-Rickshaw from Station to Niladri Vihar

  • Distance: 8 to 10 km
  • Duration: 20 to 30 minutes (light traffic at this hour)
  • Cost: ₹150 to ₹250 (evening rates may be slightly higher)

Ola/Uber from Station

At 9:00 PM on a Saturday, ride-hailing apps are more reliable than they were at 5:00 AM:

  • Ola/Uber Auto: ₹120 to ₹200
  • Uber Go (car): ₹200 to ₹350
  • Wait time: 3 to 10 minutes

Mo Bus from Station

If a Mo Bus Route 9 is available (last buses run until approximately 9:30 PM), it costs only ₹10-₹15 to Niladri Vihar. Check the Ama Bus app for real-time availability.

Arriving Home: The Post-Trip Protocol

You walk into Lane 5, Sector 5, Niladri Vihar at approximately 9:30 PM to 10:30 PM. Here is what to do:

  1. Remove footwear at the door. Traditional practice after a temple visit.
  2. Shower immediately. Wash off the dust, sweat, and salt from the beach.
  3. Drink 500ml of water or ORS. Rehydrate.
  4. Light dinner. Do not eat heavy food. Your stomach has been through Mahaprasad and snacks. A simple khichdi, dal-rice, or roti-sabzi is sufficient.
  5. Distribute the Khaja. If you bought Khaja sweets from Puri, share them with neighbours or family members as prasad. This is a beautiful Odishan tradition — bringing the Lord’s prasad home to share.
  6. Rest. Your body has been through 17 hours of continuous activity. Sleep well.
