Part 2: How to Actually Start Conversations

A practical guide to initiating conversations, breaking the ice, and moving past small talk.

How to Actually Start Conversations

Most people think conversation is about “being interesting.” That’s the wrong approach.

Conversation is mostly about:

  • Making people comfortable
  • Making people feel heard
  • Making interaction emotionally easy

Active listening is one of the strongest known social tools. When you listen, people feel valued.

The Best Conversation Formula

Here is a practical, step-by-step formula to start conversations with colleagues at TCS, people at your accommodation, or anyone you meet in Bhubaneswar.

STEP 1 — Observation

Comment on something around you that you both share. It’s low stakes and easy.

  • “Long queue at the cafeteria today.”
  • “You also staying in company accommodation?”
  • “That laptop sticker is cool.”

STEP 2 — Open Question

Give them a chance to talk without trapping them into a simple “yes” or “no”.

  • “Where are you from originally?”
  • “How’s Bhubaneswar treating you compared to your hometown?”
  • “Which project are you in right now?”

STEP 3 — Follow-up (The Secret Sauce)

THIS is where friendship starts. Most people don’t follow up. They treat small talk like an interview.

If someone says: “I’m from Kolkata.”

Bad response: “Oh nice.” (The conversation dies here).

Good response: “Kolkata food is elite honestly. Do you miss the street food here in Bhubaneswar?”

That creates an emotional continuation. It shows you listened, and it opens the door for a real exchange of thoughts and experiences.
