Part 13: Standard Chartered — Dining & Fuel Focus

A look at Standard Chartered's Lifetime Free offerings. Learn how to leverage the Platinum Rewards card for dining and fuel savings.

Part 13: Standard Chartered — Dining & Fuel Focus

Continuing our analysis of foreign banks in India, Standard Chartered (StanChart) has a long-standing history in the Indian market. While their premium cards (like the Ultimate card) are strictly paid, they maintain a very strong entry-level Lifetime Free offering tailored for specific spending categories.

🏦 Standard Chartered’s Core Policy

  • Location Constraints: Like HSBC, StanChart requires you to be in a city where they have a banking presence.
  • Multiple Cards: You can hold multiple StanChart cards, but approvals for secondary cards can be stringent unless you have a high-value salary account with them.
  • Approval Process: Their V-KYC process is smooth, and they highly favor applicants with existing high-limit credit cards from other banks (Card-to-Card basis).

💳 The Core LTF Card: Standard Chartered Platinum Rewards

This card has been a staple in the Indian credit card market for nearly a decade. While it has seen some devaluations, it remains a solid Lifetime Free option if your major expenses are eating out and driving.

  • Status: Usually offered as Lifetime Free for salaried professionals applying digitally. (Always check the banner before applying).
  • Best For: Dining and Fuel.

The Reward Structure

  • Dining Out: Earn 5 Reward Points for every ₹150 spent on fine-dining outlets.
  • Fuel: Earn 5 Reward Points for every ₹150 spent on fuel at any petrol pump across India.
  • Other Spends: Earn 1 Reward Point for every ₹150 spent on all other categories.
  • (Note: 1 Reward Point = approx ₹0.25 in redemption value).

Key Benefits

  • The “Good Life” Program: This is StanChart’s biggest hidden perk. Cardholders get access to the “Good Life” dining program, which offers flat 15% to 20% discounts at hundreds of premium restaurants across India, simply for paying with the card.
  • No Fuel Surcharge: Complete waiver of the 1% fuel surcharge.

🎯 Corporate Advantage: The TCS Perspective

If your TCS office is in a major hub like Mumbai, Chennai, or Bangalore, StanChart cards are very easy to acquire.

While the Platinum Rewards card won’t beat the SBI Cashback card for online shopping, it is a brilliant glovebox card. Keep it in your car purely for fuel purchases and weekend dining. Because it is Lifetime Free, you don’t have to worry about hitting an annual spending milestone to justify holding it.
