India Free Healthcare Part 8: Odisha — Truly Free Healthcare

Odisha's BSKY, Niramaya, and NIDAN make it one of the few states where healthcare is genuinely 100% free at government hospitals.

Part 8: Odisha — Where Healthcare is Truly Free

Odisha has quietly built one of India’s most comprehensive free healthcare ecosystems. The combination of BSKY + Niramaya + NIDAN means almost everything is free at state hospitals.

Key Schemes:

  • BSKY: ₹5 Lakh/family (₹10 Lakh for women). Cashless at govt + private hospitals.
  • Niramaya: Free medicines (500+ drugs) at all government hospital DDCs.
  • NIDAN: Free diagnostics (CT, MRI, X-ray, all lab tests) at government hospitals.
  • Combined result: OPD + Medicines + Tests + Surgery + ICU = ₹0 at state hospitals.

Top Government Hospitals:

  • AIIMS Bhubaneswar — Central govt. 40+ departments. Emergency free.
  • Capital Hospital (PGIMER) — State flagship. Everything free.
  • SCB Medical College, Cuttack — Largest medical college in Odisha. All specialties.
  • KIMS, Bhubaneswar — Private but BSKY-empanelled. Cashless.
  • VIMSAR, Burla — Major govt medical college for Western Odisha.
