Part 2.3: The Natural Derivatives — Alpha Arbutin & Licorice Root

Ranking the best plant-derived skin-brightening agents. A look at Alpha Arbutin, Licorice, and Mulberry, including Indian brand prices and efficacy for South Asian skin.

Part 2.3: The Natural Derivatives

In the world of skin brightening, “Natural” doesn’t always mean weak. Some of the most effective molecules used in high-end dermatology are actually derived from plants. In this chapter, we rank the derivatives that offer a gentler alternative to prescriptions while still delivering noticeable results for Indian skin.

These are ranked by their “Efficacy” (Efficacy Rank #12 to #17).

🏆 Efficacy Rank #12: Alpha Arbutin

The “Gentle Hydroquinone”

Alpha Arbutin is a naturally occurring derivative of Hydroquinone, found in the Bearberry plant.

How it Works

It is a “slow-release” version of Hydroquinone. It inhibits tyrosinase activity by mimicking the enzyme’s substrate. Because it releases its active molecule slowly, it doesn’t have the toxicity of raw Hydroquinone. It is widely considered one of the safest and most effective ingredients for long-term use in Indian skin (Fitzpatrick III-V).

🥈 Efficacy Rank #13: Licorice Root Extract (Glabridin)

The “Soothing Brightener”

Licorice root contains a specific molecule called Glabridin.

How it Works

Glabridin is a potent tyrosinase inhibitor. What makes it unique is its anti-inflammatory properties. For Indian skin, which is prone to redness and heat-induced irritation, Licorice root is a miracle. it brightens while calming the skin down. It is often the primary ingredient in high-end “Ubtan” formulations.

🥉 Efficacy Rank #14: Glutathione (Topical)

The “Master Antioxidant”

Glutathione is the subject of much debate in India. While IV injections are risky, topical Glutathione is becoming popular.

How it Works

It works by converting “Eumelanin” (the brown/black pigment dominant in Indian skin) into “Pheomelanin” (a lighter, yellowish pigment). It also fights oxidative stress from pollution.

  • Brands: Glutavit, Glowish.

4. Mulberry Extract (Morus Alba)
