100 Best Teen Dramas Part 2: The Y2K Revolution (2000s Essentials)

The early 2000s saw the teen drama explode into a cultural phenomenon. The music was emo, the jeans were low-rise, and the drama was dialled up to eleven. Here are the next 10 shows in our masterlist.

11. Gilmore Girls (2000–2007)

The fast-talking, coffee-fueled story of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore in the quirky town of Stars Hollow.

  • Why it’s a must-watch: It’s the ultimate “comfort” show. It explores the unique bond between a young mother and her teenage daughter with wit and warmth.
  • Best Character: Paris Geller (The most intense and hilarious overachiever in TV history).

12. One Tree Hill (2003–2012)

What started as a show about two half-brothers competing on a high school basketball team became a decade-long saga of friendship, tragedy, and some of the best music on TV.

  • Why it’s a must-watch: It has heart. It’s a show that grew up with its audience, following the characters into adulthood.
  • Best Character: Brooke Davis (The most incredible character growth in the genre).

13. The O.C. (2003–2007)

“California, here we come!” When Ryan Atwood, a kid from the “wrong side of the tracks,” is taken in by the wealthy Cohen family, it changed the teen drama landscape forever.

  • Why it’s a must-watch: It was meta, funny, and incredibly stylish. It defined the mid-2000s indie-rock aesthetic.
  • Best Character: Seth Cohen (The blueprint for the “nerd-cool” archetype).

14. Friday Night Lights (2006–2011)

“Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.” Set in a small Texas town where high school football is a religion, this show is a deeply moving look at community and character.

  • Why it’s a must-watch: The cinematography and performances make it feel more like a documentary than a scripted show.
  • Best Character: Coach Eric Taylor (The father figure we all wish we had).

15. Veronica Mars (2004–2007)

A neo-noir mystery about a teenage girl who works as a private investigator in the wealthy town of Neptune.

  • Why it’s a must-watch: Kristen Bell is iconic as the sharp-tongued, brilliant, and resilient Veronica.
  • Best Character: Logan Echolls (The “obligatory psychotic jackass” with a heart of gold).

16. Smallville (2001–2011)

A “before he was Superman” story focusing on a teenage Clark Kent navigating his powers and his complicated friendship with Lex Luthor.

  • Why it’s a must-watch: It ground a superhero story in human emotions and high school drama.
  • Best Character: Lex Luthor (One of the best-written villains in TV history).

17. Everwood (2002–2006)

A world-renowned neurosurgeon moves his two children to a small mountain town after his wife dies. It’s a quiet, beautiful drama about grief and starting over.

  • Why it’s a must-watch: It features a very young Chris Pratt in one of his first major roles!

18. Greek (2007–2011)

Set at a fictional university, it follows the lives of students in the Greek system (fraternities and sororities).

  • Best Character: Cappie.

19. Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001–2015)

The show that “goes there.” This Canadian staple tackled every possible issue facing teenagers with a rotating cast (including a young Drake!).

  • Why it’s a must-watch: It’s an institution. It’s honest, educational, and often heartbreakingly real.
  • Best Character: Manny Santos.

20. Life Unexpected (2010–2011)

A late 2000s gem about a girl who has spent her life in foster care and seeks out her birth parents as a teenager.
